Leviticus 15:15 NLT
”The priest will offer one bird for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. Through this process, the priest will purify the man before the Lord for his discharge.“
Being a priest by content
In the Old Testament, the priest was responsible for purifying the man who was healed of bodily discharge. This was a crucial responsibility that required the utmost care and attention. It is important to note that being a priest was not just about having the title but content. A priest, by content, would not worsen an already frosty relationship between man and God but would be ready to ensure that the gap created by the transgression is closed.
The purification exercise had two parts: one for atonement of sin and the other for burnt offerings. The process involved using two turtledoves or pigeons, as the blood of one bird could not achieve both outcomes. The first bird’s blood was used to atone for the man’s sin, while the second was for a burnt offering.
However, with the coming of Christ, we are privileged to have a better way of atonement. Through His death and resurrection, His blood atones for our sins and is a sweet-smelling savour unto God. And unlike the Old Testament sacrifices that had to be performed repeatedly, Christ’s sacrifice was done once and for all, giving us eternal redemption and salvation. Friends, what a privilege we have in Christ Jesus!
