Leviticus 13:45 NLT
”Those who suffer from a serious skin disease must tear their clothing and leave their hair uncombed. They must cover their mouth and call out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’“
In the interest of others
Every action that people take is typically done to benefit someone, whether it’s themselves or others close to them. In today’s Scripture, the Lord commands those with serious skin diseases to perform three actions. Firstly, the affected person must tear their clothes. This action represents grief and separation, a physical manifestation of the emotional pain that the person is experiencing. Secondly, the person must leave their hair uncombed. This rule is similar to the first, symbolizing a lack of care for one’s appearance. The third endeavour is to cover the mouth while shouting “unclean.” This action is meant to warn others to stay away.
In today’s world, people often believe that their neighbours have malicious intentions, and they attribute unpleasant situations to others. They may stay silent and allow others to fall victim rather than warn them of the danger. However, this is not the right way to act towards one another. We must love our neighbours as ourselves at all times, not just when things are going well for us. This involves being honest and open with them, even if it may be difficult or uncomfortable.
In summary, the lesson from this Scripture is that we must be considerate of others and treat others with kindness and respect, even in difficult situations. It is essential to be aware of the impact of our actions and act in a way that benefits those around us, not just ourselves.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for telling me that I must not be selfish even when the situation is unpleasant. I ask for the enablement to be selfless always; please grant it to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
