Leviticus 12:7 NLT
“The priest will then present them to the Lord to purify her. Then she will be ceremonially clean again after her bleeding at childbirth. These are the instructions for a woman after the birth of a son or a daughter.”
To the Lord
In Leviticus 12, new mothers had to follow three crucial steps before touching Holy items and entering the sanctuary. Firstly, the mother had to wait for a certain amount of time, which varied depending on the child’s gender.
Secondly, after the waiting period had ended, the mother had to present two items – a burnt offering and a purification offering – to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle. The burnt offering was voluntary, representing complete surrender to God, while the purification offering was mandatory and intended to cleanse the mother of impurity. The priest inspected the offerings to ensure they were unblemished and without defects.
Thirdly, the priest had to offer these items to the Lord on behalf of the mother. The burnt offering was wholly consumed by fire on the altar, while the purification offering was partly burnt and partly consumed by the priest and his family. The entire activity was considered null and void if anyone who should not eat the offering did so.
However, by shedding Jesus’s blood on the cross at Calvary, we no longer need to worry about someone making a mistake and, in the process, invalidating our efforts to make our relationship right with God because Jesus did it for us. We no longer need to rely on the blood of animals for purification but rather on the blood of the Lamb of God.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for relieving me of the burden of purification instructions. Please help me to trust in You alone and not to revive what You have discarded. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
