Leviticus 11:7 NLT
“The pig has evenly split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is unclean.”
Don’t get fixated!
Per a Yoruba proverb, it is believed that if a leaf remains attached to a bar of soap for a prolonged period, it will eventually become a part of the soap itself. This proverb can be applied to the people of Israel during their time in Egypt. It is possible that they adopted some of the practices of their hosts during their stay, such as the consumption of pigs. However, God sent Moses to free them from their physical oppressors and provided instructions to liberate them from their hosts’ practices.
In the referenced Scripture, God specifically mentions pigs and emphasizes that while they have split hooves like other animals, this alone does not make them acceptable for consumption. The mention of evenly split hooves in the discussion implies that nothing must be used to justify disobedience to God’s instructions. God clearly states that pigs are not suitable for consumption by the people of Israel. Does the rule apply to Christians? We are undoubtedly in the dispensation of grace; however, we must endeavour not to put ourselves under the shackles of anything.
It is important not to become fixated on the prohibition against eating pork, as God does not restrict the consumption of animal meat in general. We should not make the same mistake as Adam and Eve, who lost their relationship with God because they focused on the one forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, forgetting that they had access to all other fruits. Therefore, it is essential to follow God’s instructions and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that I will not get fixated on what You asked me not to do. Instead, I pray for the strength to do anything You have allowed me to do. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
