Leviticus 10:9 NLT
“You and your descendants must never drink wine or any other alcoholic drink before going into the Tabernacle. If you do, you will die. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation.”
‭‭
You and your descendants
The scripture referenced today contains a message that is both profound and thought-provoking. It concerns the issue of alcohol, which became a topic of discussion shortly after the tragic deaths of Nadab and Abihu. These two individuals chose to offer a strange fire on the altar of incense, an act which ultimately led to their demise. As we delve deeper into the text, we see that the Lord forbade Aaron and his descendants from drinking alcohol before entering the Tabernacle. However, it is important to note that this prohibition was not perpetual.

Through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, we have been given the gift of liberty, but with this freedom comes responsibility. We must exercise discretion and use our rights in a manner that glorifies God. As we reflect on this message, a question arises: could it be possible that Nadab and Abihu’s fatal mistake occurred under the influence of alcohol? The timing of the instruction suggests that this may have been the case, and the severity of the consequences serves as a warning to all of us.

As followers of Christ, it is crucial not only to maintain purity in what we eat and drink but also in our thoughts and actions. We are vessels unto honour and should strive to live our lives in a pleasing manner to God. Let us heed the message contained within the scripture and use our liberty to bring glory to His name.

Prayer
Dear God, please help me to maintain purity in and out of the church. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
