Leviticus 7:24 NLT
“The fat of an animal found dead or torn to pieces by wild animals must never be eaten, though it may be used for any other purpose.”
Must never be eaten
As an undergraduate student at a publicly funded university in Nigeria, I had the privilege of living in a dormitory on campus. However, during my stay, I observed that some of the electrical panels in the dorm were left open, exposing the wires inside. Despite Porter’s attempts to warn students of the danger by using phrases like “don’t touch,” some students did not take this seriously. It was only after one of the warning signs was changed to read “it is okay to touch it” that students stopped tampering with the exposed wires.
In today’s scripture reference, God warned the Israelites against consuming the fat of any dead animal, just as He prohibited the consumption of fat from live animals. This prohibition was not arbitrary; instead, it was rooted in God’s concern for His people’s health and well-being. The fact that God allowed the use of fat for other purposes suggests that the Israelites were already aware of its uses, possibly learned from their time in Egypt. However, it is essential to understand that not all ideas or ways of life align with God’s kingdom. As believers, we must strive to align our thoughts and actions with God’s will and purpose for our lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You to seek Your guidance and wisdom. I pray that You give me the strength always to uphold Your teachings, even when they may contradict the norms of my surroundings or society. May I never waver in my faith and commitment to You, and may I always seek to do what is pleasing in Your sight. I pray this in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
