Leviticus 4:23 NLT
“When he becomes aware of his sin, he must bring as his offering a male goat with no defects.”
Awareness of sin
Regardless of our positions, we are all accountable to God. Today’s referenced scripture notes that even elders are not left out. Aside from the fact that they are not immune to sin, they are not excluded from atoning for their errors. However, the atonement process cannot start until there is awareness. So, how could an elder realize his mistake? It could either be through self-reflection or by being surrounded by forthright friends. In the case of David, the Lord revealed his atrocities to the prophet Nathan, and it took courage to confront the king about it, unlike Joab, who knew what David did to Uriah but kept mute. Nathan did not stop short of calling a spade a spade. Thus, regardless of how the elder became aware of his sin, he was not allowed to downplay it. Hence, he was required to sacrifice a male goat with no defect. It is worth noting that the sacrificial animal differed from the high priest’s or even the entire house of Israel. And this suggested that “the ruler, though major singulis–greater than each, was minor universis–less than the whole.”
