Leviticus 4:3 NLT
“If the high priest sins, bringing guilt upon the entire community, he must give a sin offering for the sin he has committed. He must present to the Lord a young bull with no defects.”
If the high priest sins
Under the law, there was free will. For instance, burnt offerings, grain offerings and peace offerings were not obligatory. In other words, anyone that wanted to express their devotion to God could perform the sacrifices mentioned above (Leviticus 2 & 3). However, in the case of the sin offering, it was obligatory not just for the people but also for the high priest to perform it if he happened to sin. If God wouldn’t give the high priests any slack, then we all must know that He does not play favouritism. The fact that there was such a high operational requirement to remedy accidental errors suggested that God does not toy with sin. Imagine that the sin offering is still in effect; performing the offering would have been very difficult in the Western world due to animal rights! God, as the all-knowing, gave us a perfect sin offering through our High Priest – Jesus Christ, who, without any sin, atoned for our sins with His life.
Prayer
I thank You, the King of glory, for giving us Your precious Son to redeem us. May all glory and honour forever be Yours. In Jesus’s name, amen.
