Leviticus 1:9 NLT
“But the internal organs and the legs must first be washed with water. Then the priest will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar as a burnt offering. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.”
Why internal organs and legs?
None of God’s instructions can be treated with a pinch of salt. Hence the instruction regarding the washing of the internal organs and legs cannot be neglected. Yet the purpose of washing the internal organs and the legs of the slaughtered burnt offering animal transcended hygiene. It was more about what God requires from us. The Psalmist says that God desires truth in the inward part. Hence the washing of the internal organs symbolized internal purity or cleanliness. During the time of the Second Temple, Ellicott – a theologian, asserted that the washing occurred thrice before it could be deemed complete. Like the washing of the internal organs, the washing of the animal’s legs symbolized the significance of the offeror’s walk before God – meaning their way must be pure before God. It also meant that God took away any form of the unholy track they might have threaded. Through Jesus, you and I no longer need the sacrifice because His death did change the requirements to just one – which is Him! As Kristyn and Keath Getty stated in their song, “In Christ alone, our hope is found.”
Prayer
King of glory, in You my hope is found. Please help me to remain steadfast in You. In Jesus’s name, amen.
