Leviticus 1:5 NLT
“Then slaughter the young bull in the Lord’s presence, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, will present the animal’s blood by splattering it against all sides of the altar that stands at the entrance to the Tabernacle.”
In the Lord’s presence
Why did the Lord request that the slaughtering of the burnt offering animal happen in His presence? Indeed, it wasn’t because God derived pleasure in seeing how an animal grasped for breath while dying. The essence of the instruction was perhaps to ensure that the Israelites followed a humane approach in slaughtering the animals. Do not forget that the Israelites had lived in Egypt for several years and might have imbibed how the Egyptians killed their animals for sacrifice. Friends, following God, means accepting His instructions and rejecting whatever pattern we might have learned through experiences. As for the blood of the animal, the instruction was explicit. Aaron’s sons were in charge, and they were to splatter it on all sides of the altar of burnt offering. One can imagine what it means for any side not to be covered. The good news is that when Jesus shed His blood on the cross at Calvary, no side was left uncovered. Hence, everyone who trusts in His finished work of salvation has full coverage.
Prayer
King of glory, I appreciate the death of Jesus Christ for my redemption. Thank You for your goodness and mercy. In Jesus’s name, amen.
