Numbers 3:13 NLT
“for all the firstborn males are mine. On the day I struck down all the firstborn sons of the Egyptians, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both of people and of animals. They are mine; I am the Lord.”
The merciful God
There is a recurring tendency among humans: we often evade taking full responsibility for our actions. However, this behaviour stands in stark contrast to the King of Glory, who exemplifies accountability in all His deeds. It is crucial to understand that God explicitly affirmed that the events that transpired in Egypt on the night He liberated the Israelites were His doing.
Many grapple with the notion that the Only Wise and Benevolent God would impose such a severe judgment. To them, God’s actions were a vengeful response to Pharaoh’s appalling act of infanticide, wherein countless innocent lives of male babies were taken. In their view, God should have dealt directly and specifically with Pharaoh to penalize him for his atrocities, rather than allowing the judgments to extend to innocent victims. Ironically, these same individuals express a desire for God to confront evil decisively, rejecting any semblance of leniency.
A more thorough examination of the related scripture reveals that God’s judgment was fundamentally aimed at Pharaoh, who arrogantly considered himself a deity, wielding ultimate authority over life and death. The plagues and subsequent actions taken by God served as both a challenge to Pharaoh’s self-proclaimed divinity and a stark reminder of the futility of opposing the true God. Furthermore, it is essential to highlight that amid this judgment, God demonstrated mercy by sparing the firstborn females and males of other birth orders, illustrating that His judgments are tempered with compassion, even in the face of righteous wrath.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You showed mercy to Pharaoh in judgment, despite all his atrocities. Please remember the finished work of salvation that Jesus purchased with His blood, and have mercy on my life. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
