Leviticus 26:7 NLT
“In fact, you will chase down your enemies and slaughter them with your swords.”
‭‭
Do you trust God’s plan?
The Lord knows the choices and responses we will make in any given situation, reflecting His omniscience and understanding of human nature. In today’s referenced scripture, He articulates the actions the people of Israel will undertake against their enemies once they reach the promised land of Canaan—a land flowing with milk and honey, rich in promises and potential. Their approach to confronting these adversaries is not merely a historical account; it resonates with a mindset echoed by certain factions within Christendom today, revealing a pattern of behaviour that prioritizes human judgment over divine guidance.

Even the disciples, who enjoyed the profound privilege of walking closely with Jesus during His earthly ministry, displayed this reactive mindset. One notable incident involved a Samaritan village that denied Him passage through their streets. At that moment, their immediate instinct was to propose calling down fire from heaven to consume the unwelcoming villagers. This reaction exemplifies a troubling inclination toward retribution and vengeance, overshadowing the virtues of understanding, compassion, and grace that Jesus embodied and sought to instill in His followers.

A thoughtful examination of the referenced scripture indicates that while God did not explicitly endorse or oppose the Israelites’ plans to confront their enemies, their intentions stood in stark contradiction to God’s broader design for His people as expressed in Leviticus 26:6. In this passage, God promises to safeguard the Israelites from hostile nations, ensuring their safety and granting them peace in their land—a promise grounded in His steadfast love and commitment to their well-being.

So, why did the Israelites’ approach diverge significantly from God’s will? Why, despite God’s assurances of protection and the promise of peace, did the people themselves lean toward an aggressive and violent course of action, seeking to eliminate those who opposed them? This discrepancy raises a profound question for contemplation: Do we perceive God’s plan as final and immutable, or do we often pursue paths motivated by our emotions, personal experiences, and the pressures of our environment?

It is essential to remember that the table the Lord prepared for David was set in the presence of his enemies, symbolizing divine provision even amid adversity. If we walk according to the divine plan, we can rest assured that no enemy can exercise ultimate authority over our lives. Therefore, let us trust in God’s plan and embrace His guidance with faith and assurance.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for Your guidance and support as I navigate my feelings towards those who have wronged me. Please help me to trust in Your divine plan for these individuals, believing that, like all of us, they are capable of change and growth. Please grant me the strength to let go of any resentment I hold and replace it with compassion, understanding, and a sense of peace. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
