Leviticus 25:53 NLT
“The foreigner must treat them as workers hired on a yearly basis. You must not allow a foreigner to treat any of your fellow Israelites harshly.”
‭‭
Don’t look away
In today’s referenced scripture, we read about the responsibilities that the Lord required of foreigners who purchased native-born individuals who offered themselves for sale, as well as the entire community of Israel where the endeavour has occurred. The buyer’s responsibility is not to view this purchase as permanent; instead, it should be considered a yearly contract. Hence, he must not assign tasks that require more than a year to complete. This is because the person might become wealthy, or someone from his family might negotiate a release price or even repurchase him to set him free.

Regarding the second responsibility, the Lord emphasized that all native-born individuals must act as guardians, ensuring that those who have sold themselves do not face ill-treatment. Essentially, God desires that no native-born person adopt an indifferent attitude toward anyone in a vulnerable situation. They must not close their eyes or feel unconcerned. This is reflected in scripture, which states that if anyone falls into sin, those standing should rally to help restore him (Galatians 6:1).

Lastly, it is essential to note that none of these instructions is optional. The Lord gave these instructions to be followed, not just as a formality. Friends, how do you treat those at your service, and what steps do you take to ensure that others are not mistreated in your community?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I navigate through each day, I ask for Your guidance in embodying kindness and compassion in all my interactions. Help me remain vigilant and attentive, like a watchman on a tower, so that I may recognize those in vulnerable or precarious situations. Please grant me the wisdom and courage to offer support and solace to those in need. May my actions reflect Your love and grace in the world. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
