Leviticus 25:44 NLT
“You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property,”
What would you do?
Every legitimate business transaction necessitates the involvement of two parties: a seller and a buyer. However, the essence of such transactions goes beyond mere participation; no item can be acquired unless it is explicitly offered for sale. For instance, when a mother raised poultry on her farm and faced the decision to sell, she always retained a few cherished birds that she would not sell, regardless of the tempting prices offered by eager buyers. These particular birds held immeasurable sentimental value and connection to her, highlighting the importance of discernment in what we choose to part with.
In the scripture referenced today, the Lord made it abundantly clear that when temporary residents—such as sojourners and foreigners—presented the option of selling their children, the Israelites would have the choice to purchase them. Notably, the Lord did not command the Israelites to buy these children; instead, He indicated they could choose to do so if they found it fitting. This begs the question: what would our response be if faced with a decision where both doing and not doing something would have no bearing on our relationship with God?
Take, for example, the story of Abraham. The scripture recounts that after he successfully rescued the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah from captivity, he consciously chose to refuse any of the spoils of war despite his entitlement to claim them. This decision underscores a profound principle: whenever we find ourselves with the freedom to make choices, we should do so with the understanding that we represent God in all our actions. As His ambassadors, our decisions reflect our values and priorities, emphasizing the importance of making choices that align with our faith and integrity.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that in every situation, You will grant me wisdom to behave in a way that gives glory to You. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
