Leviticus 25:44 NLT
“However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you.”
You may does not mean you must
People have a wide range of perspectives on God, and many of these views, when closely examined, can often be seen as unfounded. For instance, some individuals choose to distance themselves from God due to the biblical accounts of nations being wiped out. However, what is often overlooked is the historical context surrounding these events. Notably, God gave those nations over 400 years to repent for their grievous sins, such as the practice of sacrificing day-old babies to please their idols.
Another topic that elicits strong reactions is slavery. It’s important to clarify that there is no explicit command in the Bible endorsing slavery as an acceptable practice. Instead, slavery emerged as a human institution rooted in the social and economic conditions of the time. God intends to eliminate this practice, which is reflected in the specific restrictions He placed, instructing that no Jews should be sold into slavery. This directive illustrates God’s desire for justice and compassion.
If we accept that charity begins at home, understanding these principles can have a ripple effect on how we treat others in society. The Lord’s teachings do not support slavery; if that had been His intention, He would have used language indicating endorsement rather than leaving the choice up to the people of Israel. Friends, are you behaving like Paul, who chose to forgo certain privileges for God’s glory?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for Your guidance and wisdom in my daily pursuits. Please help me discern which activities and endeavours are essential in Your eyes so I may focus my time and energy on what aligns with Your will. Protect me from distractions or commitments that serve no significant purpose in my life, allowing me to invest my efforts in ways that honour You and contribute to my growth and the well-being of others. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
