Leviticus 25:4 NLT
“but during the seventh year the land must have a Sabbath year of complete rest. It is the Lord’s Sabbath. Do not plant your fields or prune your vineyards during that year.”
‭‭
A Sabbath year of complete rest
Before modern scientific research highlighted the benefits of leaving a parcel of land fallow after years of continuous cultivation, the King of Glory had already imparted this wisdom to the people of Israel. This underscores the belief that God is all-knowing and wise, revealing profound truths to those who are faithful to Him. In the referenced scripture, the Lord commanded those who chose farming to allow their fields to remain uncultivated and their vineyards unpruned for an entire year, known as the Year of Sabbath Rest.

A noteworthy aspect of this divine instruction is that God did not assign any overseer to ensure adherence to His commands. Instead, He entrusted each farmer with the personal responsibility to track their years of cultivation and to observe a period of rest in the seventh year. This emphasis on individual accountability encourages believers to embrace and internalize God’s guidance without relying on external enforcement or reminders.

Given the prohibition on farming their land, a valid concern is how the farmers would sustain themselves during this year of rest. God intended for them to recognize that while human effort is vital in all endeavours, it is ultimately not their strength that brings blessings. Instead, it is His divine provision and grace that sustain them. By stepping away from their usual toil, they would be compelled to trust in God’s promise of abundance and provision, reinforcing their dependence on Him rather than solely on their labour.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for Your guidance and strength to trust in You wholeheartedly, especially during moments of uncertainty when I face challenges and the future feels unclear. Help me to lean on Your wisdom and grace, knowing that You hold my path in Your hands. Remind me to find peace in Your presence, even when I cannot see what lies ahead. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
