Leviticus 24:22 NLT
“This same standard applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”
Same standard
We live in a world where the standards designed to apply universally often exist merely on paper, failing to manifest in reality. The pressing question arises: who is accountable for this discrepancy? Typically, it stems from a lax enforcement of these standards. Today’s referenced scripture emphasizes that equity is a divine mandate not only for native-born Israelites but also for the foreigners residing among them. In the kingdom of God, all distinctions dissolve; social status, nationality, and past transgressions do not define a person’s worth or potential for redemption.
Regardless of how tattered one’s clothing may be before embracing faith, that outward appearance is irrelevant. Once a person takes that courageous step towards God, their worn fabric will be exchanged for the finest garments of grace, symbolizing renewal and acceptance. God perceives all of us as equals. Therefore, the sins committed by native-born Israelites carry the same weight and consequence as those committed by an outsider. We cannot afford to treat the misdeeds of one group with a mere slap on the wrist while imposing strict penalties on another for similar offences; that defies the very essence of justice.
If we truly yearn for an equitable community, we have the responsibility to foster that environment. A few years ago, during a presidential election in Nigeria, when some citizens were asked about their willingness to vote, their responses were startling. Many claimed they were voting for God as if the I AM WHO I AM required human support to govern the cosmos. This sentiment reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of justice and governance.
In Micah 6:8, the Prophet Micah articulates God’s desire for humanity, outlining the necessary ingredients for societal harmony and spiritual peace: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God. Embracing these principles is essential to preventing a dysfunctional society and ensuring we live in true alignment with divine expectations.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You have clearly instructed me not to be sentimental with Your Word but to use it to correct everyone by the same standard. This is to help all understand the unmatched and unparalleled benefits that Jesus’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension offer to each individual in God’s kingdom. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
