Leviticus 24:21 NLT
“Whoever kills an animal must pay for it in full, but whoever kills another person must be put to death.”

A transformative shift in heart
When the instructions detailed in the referenced scripture were issued, it is important to note that the pivotal challenges had yet to manifest or be encountered. This indicates that God does not function from the perspective of hindsight but rather possesses an all-knowing foresight into human nature. He understands that the human heart is “desperately wicked,” a condition that makes it incredibly challenging for individuals to fully grasp their own motivations and potential for sin.

In response to this inherent human weakness, God provided guidelines tailored for addressing various situations as they unfolded. These instructions serve as a moral and ethical framework to help His followers navigate the complexities of life as adversities arise. What is particularly noteworthy is that none of the individuals among them voiced any objections about the potential for conflict or moral failings within their community, suggesting an assumption of unity and righteousness that may not have been justified.

The underlying lesson is profound: one can physically depart from Egypt yet still carry the ingrained attitudes and mindsets shaped by that environment. This serves as a reminder that true liberation requires a change in circumstance and a transformative shift in perspective and heart. Note that the Lord didn’t say their neighbours, but His instruction centred on the people of Israel. It was not the neighbouring countries that would kill their animals or other people but themselves. If we are one, we must not have any hand in making life difficult for anyone. Friends, what kind of community member are you?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You seeking guidance and strength. Please help me discern opportunities and activities that truly honour and glorify Your name, steering me away from those unaligned with Your will. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
