Leviticus 24:18 NLT
“Anyone who kills another person’s animal must pay for it in full—a live animal for the animal that was killed.”
No exemption from accountability
God deeply cares about the well-being of every individual and consistently demonstrates this through His commandments and principles. In His desire for us to support one another, He emphasizes the importance of community and mutual respect. For the people of Israel, the Lord issued a compelling command highlighting the necessity of love and consideration for one another’s possessions, primarily livestock.
In today’s referenced scripture, God explicitly reiterated the prohibition against killing another person’s animal, making it clear that such an act not only shows a lack of respect for the owner but also disrupts the harmony of the community. Should an individual commit this offence, the Lord mandated that the offender indemnify the owner by providing a suitable replacement, ensuring justice and accountability.
God’s concern for people’s possessions transcends social status or position, as reflected in His use of the word “anyone.” This word underscores that there is no exemption from accountability; regardless of one’s standing, all must honour the property of others. Even if Moses had made the error, the Lord’s decision would remain unchanged. He must atone for the wrongdoing by compensating the victim with another live animal.
The overarching lesson here is profound: God does not condone actions that diminish the value of a fellow believer’s property. Instead, He calls us to treat one another’s belongings with respect and integrity, fostering a spirit of stewardship and care within our communities. This commandment is a timeless reminder of the importance of valuing and protecting what belongs to others, strengthening our bonds as members of a shared community. Friends, let’s be fair in any assignment we have been tasked with.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me in my daily desire to be my brother’s keeper, whether I am being watched. I pray that I will not condone any Spirit of destruction in my heart. In Jesus’s name, Amen
