Leviticus 24:16 NLT
“Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death.”
Universal call to uphold holiness
The Lord commands that His name be revered, and anyone who calls upon Him must honour that name with the utmost respect. In today’s referenced scripture, God speaks to Moses, emphasizing that no individual is exempt from the gravity of blaspheming His name. Regardless of one’s social status or position within the community, the punishment for such an offence remains uniform: it is the collective responsibility of the entire community of Israel to address and confront these blasphemies.
It is imperative to highlight that God did not delegate the execution of judgment—expressly, the punishment of death by stoning—merely to a select few. Instead, this solemn duty falls to the whole community of Israel, underscoring that rooting out ungodly behaviour is not solely the responsibility of leaders, followers, pastors, or congregations. Instead, it is incumbent upon every individual to actively reject and stand against such wrongdoing.
Moreover, the Lord made no distinction in how individuals should be treated when it comes to blasphemy; whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner, all are subject to the same consequences. In God’s eyes, a sinner is a sinner, irrespective of their nationality or origin. This is a reminder that accountability and reverence for the divine extend beyond borders and cultural distinctions, emphasizing the universal call to uphold holiness and integrity within the community.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to love what You love and never treat what You love with levity. In Jesus’s name, Amen
