Leviticus 24:15 NLT
“Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin.”
Say to the people of Israel
When it comes to reverencing God, it is crucial to understand that this responsibility is not exclusive to preachers or religious leaders but is expected of everyone. In today’s referenced scripture, the Lord instructed Moses to deliver a message to the people of Israel and not to the natural-born Israelites or Aaron and his descendants alone. Still, it was to “the people of Israel.” This inclusion encompasses not only the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob but also those foreigners who chose to join the Israelites in their exodus from slavery in Egypt. These individuals, who embraced the covenant community, were likewise required to adhere to God’s precepts and commandments.
Unfortunately, many people wish to partake in God’s blessings and abundance without establishing a personal relationship with the Giver of all. Interestingly, this group is not necessarily composed of outright unbelievers; instead, they often identify as fans of Christ—supporters of His teachings and deeds, yet lacking steadfast commitment. Another important insight from scripture is that God did not declare that all the people of Israel would face punishment; instead, He specifically warned that only those who curse or disregard their God would suffer the consequences. This indicates that merely being part of His chosen people does not grant one immunity from accountability.
The Lord emphasizes that being His people is not a license to treat Him with contempt or to live in disobedience. In God’s kingdom, sin is never met with a mere slap on the wrist; it carries serious ramifications. Therefore, dear friends, it is a profound privilege to dwell under the protective canopy of the Lord. Let us not take this remarkable blessing for granted but commit ourselves to honoring Him with our lives and actions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, guide us to remain vigilant against irreverence towards You. Inspire us to live our lives in a way that encourages transformation in others. In Jesus’s name, Amen
