Leviticus 24:14 NLT
“Take the blasphemer outside the camp and tell all those who heard the curse to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death.”
Entire community
The Lord does nothing by trial and error; consequently, every instruction He gives is imbued with profound significance. Take, for example, the case of the blasphemer: why was it necessary for the entire community to administer the consequence rather than allowing only those who brought the matter to Moses to act? The community’s participation serves as a public testament against the wrongdoing, reinforcing a collective moral stance.
Community involvement indicates the importance of shared values and understanding right versus wrong. In other words, what you consider right cannot be exclusive to you; the same goes for what you consider wrong. What you know as right must have the same view by all and the same thing as what is considered bad. This discernment cannot occur if the truth is always evolving.
Moreover, it is essential to recognize that maintaining the sanctity of any community—be it a neighbourhood, a church congregation, or a society at large—is not solely the duty of its leaders, such as pastors or elders; it is a shared obligation among all individuals. We must take personal accountability for the moral climate we foster. By engaging in holy living and actively rooting out disobedience to God’s will, we wield our “stones” to build a more righteous community rather than cast them in judgment. In doing so, we embody the principles of justice and love God desires for His people.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help us not to turn a blind eye to irreverence to You. Please help us to live our lives in a way that will facilitate change in others. In Jesus’s name, Amen
