Leviticus 24:9 NLT
“The loaves of bread will belong to Aaron and his descendants, who must eat them in a sacred place, for they are most holy. It is the permanent right of the priests to claim this portion of the special gifts presented to the Lord.”
‭‭
Belong to Aaron and his descendants
A well-known Yoruba adage states that a person possessing a hoe will invariably leverage it to enhance their situation. This saying emphasizes that when we have advantages or resources at our disposal, we often use them to benefit ourselves. However, this principle did not apply to Moses in the biblical context. Even in the absence of Aaron and his descendants, when God provided specific instructions regarding the beneficiaries of the twelve flat loaves of bread made from the finest flour, Moses chose not to include himself among those recipients. His actions reflected a remarkable sense of contentment and selflessness.

This teaches us a valuable lesson: just because we are the means by which others receive blessings does not give us the right to take a share of those blessings for ourselves. Moses exemplified this, showcasing that true generosity involves allowing those intended to benefit from a gift to receive it fully, without selfish motives. Friends, we are reminded to avoid the pitfalls of greed; it is essential to allow others the full enjoyment of their blessings rather than seeking to claim a portion for ourselves.

Furthermore, there is a significant point to consider regarding the Lord’s use of the word “must” in His directive about the twelve loaves of bread. The Lord emphasized that Aaron and his descendants must eat these loaves every Sabbath in the sacred place as a permanent right designated for them. This insistence on “must” illustrates the importance of recognizing and upholding rightful claims based on divine decrees.

As we reflect on this notion, we should ask ourselves: what rights do we claim in our lives? Are we asserting the legitimate rights God has bestowed upon us, or are we indulging in selfish desires that distort our understanding of entitlement? It’s worth noting that the Lord did not promise any blessings for the people of Israel as a direct exchange for the priests consuming the loaves of bread. This highlights an unfortunate truth of our times; many have been conditioned to act only when a transaction is involved, seeking personal gain as a prerequisite for their actions.

Therefore, dear friends, let us strive to shift our perspective. We should not obey God for the primary reason of receiving something in return; instead, our obedience should stem from a desire to honour Him and glorify His name.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, please open my eyes to any trace of greed within me and help me address it through the Holy Spirit. I pray that my motivation for obeying You will shift from being transactional to honouring You for who You are. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
