Leviticus 23:13 NLT
“With it you must present a grain offering consisting of four quarts of choice flour moistened with olive oil. It will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. You must also offer one quart of wine as a liquid offering.”
Intentionality in offering
One noticeable aspect of God’s interactions with the Israelites is the detailed instructions He provided over time. He consistently offered a step-by-step description of what He expected from them. In this context, He indicates that offerings such as the lamb and grain, along with obedience to these commands, are a “pleasing aroma” to Him.
This raises important questions: What truly pleases God? What do we offer Him that produces this pleasing aroma? Is it the generous donations we make to charity or the church? Is it the time we dedicate to serving Him in various capacities within the church? Or the moments spent joyfully dancing before the Lord? What exactly can we offer as Christians today that would please Him?
Without dilly-dallying, these questions have a single answer. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:10 that the Holy Spirit searches God’s deep things and reveals undiscovered insights about all things, including how to please Him. We understand that the first step towards pleasing the Father is to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, whom He sent to die for us; this belief sets us on the path to salvation.
Moreover, it is essential to walk hand in hand with the Spirit of Truth, who will guide us into all truths. Therefore, in offering up sacrifices that create a pleasing aroma, we must be open to accepting the truths the Holy Spirit reveals about our service to God. Just as God provided clear instructions to the Israelites, He is always willing to guide us through the Holy Spirit on how we can offer acceptable offerings to Him.
