Leviticus 23:2 NLT
“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as official days for holy assembly.”
The Lord’s appointed festivals
Having spent considerable time in Egypt, the people of Israel were undoubtedly exposed to diverse festivals and celebrations. Egypt, a land with a rich tapestry of culture and religion, celebrated various festivals dedicated to its pantheon of gods, which the Israelites likely encountered during their stay. It might seem surprising, but historical accounts suggest that the Israelites worshiped idols while in Egypt. This point is underscored by Joshua 24:14, where Joshua admonishes the Israelites to “Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone.” His mention of the forefathers worshipping idols indicates that this practice was prevalent among the Israelites during their time in Egypt.
Although the Israelites may have participated in these diverse festivals, it is essential to note that they were engaging in celebrations that did not align with the worship of the one true God. These festivals were perhaps joyous or deeply rooted in cultural significance but were not sanctioned by God and, therefore, lacked divine approval. The Israelites likely possessed memories of these events, filled with vibrant rituals and communal gatherings, yet none of these activities brought genuine glory to God.
In the instruction, the Lord emphasized that only those festivals ordained by Him should be recognized as sacred assemblies. In essence, He urged the Israelites to forsake their past practices rooted in idolatry and to embrace a new way of worship that honoured Him alone. This call to action represented a pivotal moment in their spiritual journey, signalling a transition from the influences of their past toward a renewed commitment to their covenant with God.
