Leviticus: 22:8 (NLT)
“He may not eat an animal that has died a natural death or has been torn apart by wild animals, for this would defile him. I am the Lord.”
Call to Holiness
The mention of animals dying naturally or being torn apart by wild animals symbolizes the brokenness of the world caused by sin. This highlights how seriously God regards holiness among His people. 1 Peter 1:16 reminds us, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” This reflects God’s call for His people to maintain distinctiveness in their behaviour and practices, encouraging us to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
The phrase “I am the Lord” at the end of the verse serves as a powerful reminder of God’s authority and sovereignty. He establishes the standards for holiness and purity, emphasizing that His commands are rooted in His nature and character. This declaration invites us to submit to His authority, recognizing that He knows what is best for us in our relationship with Him.
The distinction between clean and unclean animals reflects broader themes of life, death, and the consequences of sin. Consuming what is considered unclean symbolizes a lack of discernment and can lead to spiritual defilement. This serves as a reminder to be mindful of what we allow into our lives—physically and spiritually. In 2 Corinthians 6:17, we are called to “Come out from among them and be separate,” representing the need to guard our hearts and minds.
Furthermore, the commandment in Leviticus foreshadows the ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who offers us a new covenant of grace. In Mark 7:18–19, Jesus declares that all foods are clean, illustrating a shift from the old ceremonial laws to the essence of purity of the heart. This fulfillment emphasizes that while the old laws pointed to God’s standards, our relationship with Christ defines our purity.
