Leviticus 21:14 NLT
“He may not marry a widow, a woman who is divorced, or a woman who has defiled herself by prostitution. She must be a virgin from his own clan,”
Stay pure
The high priest had a level of purity higher than all other priests. The reason is that he is the intermediary between the Holy God and His people. His actions in and out of the sanctuary must propagate purity. This brings to mind the birth of Jesus, which resulted from the union between a virgin woman and the Holy Spirit. It also calls to mind the donkey Jesus triumphantly rode into Jerusalem on – a colt that anyone else had never used before (Matthew 21). These instances indicate the extent of purity the Lord desired from the high priest, a personification of Christ Jesus. Understanding that God expects His chosen few to avoid a particular way of life that others may not see as wrong is vital.
Furthermore, it is essential to note the last part of the verse, “From his own clan.” This highlights the importance for Christians because we have become a nation of priests, to avoid being unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14). The Lord’s instruction for the high priest not to marry from other nations aside from Israel underscores the need to avoid being unequally yoked with unbelievers. An unbeliever, in the strictest sense, does not believe in Jesus and has not given his life to Him. Such a person would not be able to support Christ’s agenda in the life of a high priest. Therefore, we must seek to understand the spiritual purposes of God in our lives so we can live the kind of lives He requires of us.
