Leviticus 21:12 NLT
“He must not defile the sanctuary of his God by leaving it to attend to a dead person, for he has been made holy by the anointing oil of his God. I am the Lord.”
Don’t leave His presence
The passage of the scripture is easy to understand without the help of the Holy Spirit. The same applies to today’s referenced scripture, and its instruction might seem harsh or inhumane. However, a careful examination reveals that the I AM WHO I AM is not and never cruel to anyone. In the previous verse, God has informed the high priest about not getting closer to a dead body; otherwise, he would be unclean. And now God wanted him to note that there was something he could do that would defile the sanctuary of his God. The defilement will happen if the high priest leaves the sanctuary of his God to attend to a dead person.
The key word here is “leave.” You and I know it is impossible to leave a place where you are not presently. Therefore, the instruction implies that the high priest must not depart from the sanctuary to attend to a dead person because, while in the sanctuary, he is serving as a mediator between God and man. Given his role as a mediator, it would be insensitive for him to leave the sacrifice or offering of anyone unfinished to attend to a dead person. God comes first. He may not mind, but his actions would not only affect him but the sanctuary of his God.
As a priest, according to the order of Christ Jesus, God reminds us through this scripture to take our relationship with Him and others in our network seriously. In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus Christ highlights how the priest and the Levite failed to help a dying person because they thought doing so would defile the sanctuary. However, Jesus emphasized that their duty was to render help, regardless of location, rather than using their titles or what they would do in the future as an excuse to avoid helping someone in need.
