Leviticus 21:11 NLT
“He must not defile himself by going near a dead body. He may not make himself ceremonially unclean even for his father or mother.”
It is what it is
There are things outside our control and tasks that are within our capability. For example, the responsibility to drive a vehicle within the posted speed limit falls on the driver. The same principle applies to the high priest; otherwise, the Lord would not have placed the responsibility on his lap. Through the instruction, the Lord emphasized that the high priest can distinguish between right and wrong and should not knowingly choose to do what is wrong.
Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, our default setting has changed, and men gravitate towards what is wrong. However, the high priest wouldn’t gravitate in the wrong direction, especially if he loves God. Loving God requires prioritizing God in all endeavours. It also implies that his relationship with God and what He expects of him should take precedence over the demands of everyday life. This may seem challenging, but it is what it is.
Being a Christ follower is akin to being a high priest, which means that you and I must not compromise our values just to please others. We have dedicated ourselves to a life in Christ, and this sometimes requires sacrifices that may not be easy. For example, as priests, we cannot take shortcuts just because others expect it of us, even if it seems God hasn’t answered our prayers as quickly as we would like.
When Jesus was on earth, he understood the demands of relationships. He had a mother, brothers, and loved ones, and he cared for them. He honoured his mother’s request and turned water into wine at her behest. While on the cross at Calvary, Jesus entrusted Peter with the care of His mother. When Lazarus died, He wept. However, He always prioritized the work of the Father and never compromised His relationship with God to please earthly relationships.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I will prioritize You and not take advantage of Your grace in my life because of earthly demands. Help me balance my spiritual journey with You while fulfilling my responsibilities at home. In Jesus’s name, amen.
