Leviticus 20:26 NLT
“You must be holy because I, the Lord, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own.”
Being holy is not a herculean task
Today’s scripture emphasizes two important points. Firstly, it shows that God expected both the native-born Israelites and the foreigners living among them to take responsibility for living a holy life. God did not say He would make them holy but instructed them to “be holy.” Interestingly, there was no resistance to this expectation, as God had clearly outlined what it means to be holy.
For the people of Israel, living a holy life is not merely a suggestion but a mandate; the same goes for you and all Christians. This mandate demands that we as Christians do not pursue holiness according to the flesh but always through the guidance of the Spirit of Christ, as the desires of the flesh are of no benefit. Likewise, we must not pattern our holiness according to any human standard; otherwise, one might be in for a rude shock because the human standard for holiness is unstable.
The second message is that God made it clear that holiness is not an arbitrary standard but must align with His holiness. If the Lord were not loving, He would not have asked us to reflect His holiness. God didn’t ask the people of Israel to do something difficult, so the requirement to be holy isn’t an arduous task. Through the help of the Holy Spirit and unrelenting meditation in His word, we will be holy.
