Leviticus 20:24 NLT
“But I have promised you, ‘You will possess their land because I will give it to you as your possession—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from all other people.”
I am the Lord your God
In the last sentence of the referenced scripture, God reminded the people of Israel about His relationship with them. He never minced words to inform them that He is not their buddy or homeboy, but the Lord their God. The question is, why was that reminder necessary?
First of all, the reminder implies that God loves them. Otherwise, He would have kept quiet and allowed them to make a grievous mistake that would warrant His punishment. By reminding them, the Lord showed that He cares about them and wouldn’t want them to drift away from His presence.
Another insight for living is that the setting apart of the people of Israel cannot be traced to their efforts. Instead, it was the Lord’s doing. Friends, it is the Lord that qualifies the called. The scripture says, “Having called them, He gave them right standing with Himself.” Therefore, never nurse the notion that there are certain things you could do that cause God to set you apart.
Although Eliab did all the spiritual acrobatics that bamboozled Samuel and almost anointed him as king, the Lord rejected him. Without God setting us apart for Himself, all our righteous deeds are like filthy rags. Therefore, it is by grace that you are saved, and there should be no boasting about it.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me always remember that You are my Lord and God and that the salvation I have isn’t because of my efforts but because of the finished work the only Begotten Son accomplished on the cross at Calvary. In Jesus’s name, amen.
