Leviticus 20:11 NLT
“If a man violates his father by having sex with one of his father’s wives, both the man and the woman must be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offence.”
Contentment is great gain
The importance of being content also applies to one’s family members. This verse encompasses the instructions mentioned in the previous verses, emphasizing respect for one’s parents and the prohibition against coveting another person’s spouse. It also discourages the desire for possessions belonging to one’s father, mother, or sibling.
It’s interesting to note the phrasing of this instruction by God—the use of ‘if’ suggests that the chance of occurrence is not set in stone. Suppose the sentence had started with ‘when,’ which would have implied a lack of control over the situation.
Friends, do you notice that all events that challenge our self-control start with ‘if?’ The accuser of brethren did the same thing to our Lord and Saviour, as recorded in Matthew 4. However, our Lord and Saviour displayed contentment through the word and did not fall into the trap.
Friend, being a Christian requires that your self-control and contentment quotient always be at the highest level possible. Endeavour to uphold the principle of contentment and refrain from seeking validation through the acquisition of things that only bring harm to the soul.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when temptations arise to make me go against Your will please let the Holy Spirit remind me of Your word and help me not cave for self-gratification. In Jesus’s name, amen.
