Leviticus 20:9 NLT
“Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death. Such a person is guilty of a capital offense.

Honour above all
The verse emphasizes that dishonouring a parent is considered a capital offence and carries the repercussion of death. This highlights the significant value placed on honouring one’s parents. It’s important to note that “parent” extends beyond one’s biological father or mother to include adopted parents, caregivers, and elders. However, the focus here is on honouring one’s birth parents.

This instruction implies that children must honour their parents regardless of their relationship with them. This includes situations where parents have been neglectful or have caused harm to their children. Despite these challenges, children must honour their parents to praise God.

This brings to mind Jesus’ instruction for Christians to love their enemies. While this doesn’t imply that parents should be considered enemies, it underscores the need to honour the individuals who brought us into the world despite any mistakes they may have made.

In the Ten Commandments given to Moses, the Lord presents this instruction differently, attaching a promise of long life on earth. This can be seen as a more subtle way of emphasizing the importance of honouring one’s parents. Ultimately, for those who harbour grudges or have scars from their relationships with their parents, it’s essential to let go and embark on the journey of honour. Doing so allows us to pass on the same values to our children and enjoy fulfilling lives.

Heavenly Father, I pray for grace to honour my parents and loved ones and honour You all my life. In Jesus’s name, amen.
