“Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the Lord.”
Show respect
Today’s referenced scripture provides crucial guidance on living a life that honours others and God. Firstly, God urged the younger generation in Israel to exhibit unwavering respect for their elders, regardless of the elders’ behaviour. Secondly, the younger ones were counselled to demonstrate their respect by standing in the presence of older people. This custom holds significant importance in Nigerian culture, where some elders prefer younger individuals to kneel in their presence. Thirdly, the scripture underscores the deep connection between respect and the fear of the Lord, suggesting that a lack of reverence for the elderly indicates a lack of reverence for God. Finally, it’s important to note that God did not promise any explicit rewards for following this instruction, indicating that obedience to His commands should not be based on seeking rewards.

Dear God, please help me to wholeheartedly do Your will, not for self-aggrandizement or rent-seeking, but because I love You. Help me, Lord Jesus. Amen.
