Leviticus 19:28 NLT
“Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord.”
Don’t conform to worldly standards
Some years ago, some drivers in Calgary, AB, customized their vehicles so that they roared when they accelerated. The police department clamped down on such vehicles because of the noise pollution, but none of the drivers said, “It is my car, and I can do whatever I like with it.”
It is not uncommon to hear people say, “It is my body, and I can do whatever I like with it.” While it is your body, you cannot do as you like with it. Look at it from this perspective: You cannot drive your car the way you want or put all kinds of accessories on it the way you want. Friend, your body is more valuable than any vehicle. Please use this gift to glorify God, who gave it to you.
Those who altered their bodies in ancient times did it based on superstition. For instance, people cut their bodies to honour the dead, believing that it would bring some relief. Tattoos were common among the inhabitants of the promised land, and they tattooed themselves to indicate the god they belonged to.
Today, people, including Christians, engage in countless endeavours, but intriguingly, we don’t bother to check their origin. As followers of Christ, we are to be trailblazers because the light of God is in us. In other words, people should copy our ways of life.
Prayer
Dear God, I pray that I will not engage in any endeavour that does not originate from You, regardless of how popular it might be. So, help me, Lord Jesus, Amen.
