Leviticus 19:14 NLT
“Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am the Lord.”
Do you value your relationship with God?
The scripture referenced today highlights the meaningful inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the community of Israel. It emphasizes that God did not discriminate against people with disabilities based on their nationality, whether they were natives or foreigners. The passage also emphasizes that the support for people with disabilities was not reliant on the advocacy of others, not even Moses, as God was always there for them. This support extended beyond their time in the wilderness and encompassed their escape from the Red Sea.
The scripture also reveals that the Lord cares about how non-disabled people interact with people with disabilities. Just as a non-disabled person will not want to insult or cause another non-disabled person to stumble because of the dire consequences, the Lord desired that non-disabled people treat anyone who is deaf or blind with dignity. Friends, let’s endeavour to treat everyone with dignity.
Furthermore, the scripture emphasizes that God is present for those living with disabilities, and our treatment of them reflects our reverence for God. It emphasizes that how we treat individuals with disabilities determines how much we value our relationship with God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I value my relationship with You. Please help me not to engage in any endeavour that will undermine it. So, help me, Lord Jesus. Amen.
