Leviticus 19:9 NLT
“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop.”
When you harvest…
In the referenced scripture, God instructs the people of Israel not to harvest the grain along the edges of their fields or to gather what the harvesters drop but to leave it for the vulnerable in their midst, particularly the foreigners. This practice was a way of showing care and provision for those in need. It’s worth noting that when the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, the scriptures mention that many foreigners also escaped with them. So, God’s provision for the foreigners in the promised land was evidence of His love and foresight.
This verse also speaks to the concept of being content. By not harvesting every last bit of grain, the Israelites demonstrated their trust in God’s provision rather than trying to amass wealth through their efforts. This trust in God’s provision would ultimately lead to a life free of sorrow. Furthermore, God intended for the people of Israel to be vessels of His love to others, including the foreigners living among them. This would become visible only when they obeyed His instructions. This also serves as a reminder for us to show God’s love to others through our character, which is embedded in His instructions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I will always respond promptly to all of Your instructions, recognizing that they are vessels to express Your love for all. I ask for the strength to be grateful and satisfied with everything You have provided for me. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
