Leviticus 17:8-9 NLT
“Give them this command as well. If any native Israelite or foreigner living among you offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to offer it to the Lord, that person will be cut off from the community.”
Native of foreigner
In Yoruba culture, a proverb emphasizes the importance of adapting to different customs and rules in other places. The proverb says, “What is acceptable in one place is unacceptable in another.” This highlights the need to respect and understand the traditions and guidelines of the community where one resides to fully integrate and benefit from being there.
When God delivered the people of Israel from their Egyptian slavemasters, many foreigners also joined them in leaving. It’s a testament to God’s inclusivity that He did not turn anyone away, as everyone belongs to Him. The pronoun “them” in today’s referenced scripture reinforces this idea, suggesting that God’s instructions are meant to benefit both natives and foreigners alike. The intent behind these instructions was to ensure that neither the people of Israel nor the foreigners would engage in wrongful behaviour.
Extending these instructions to include both natives and foreigners prevented the possibility of any group incentivizing the other to disregard God’s instructions. Additionally, it’s crucial to understand that God does not play favourites based on nationality. Whether native or foreign, individuals face the same consequences for disobeying Him. This highlights God’s impartiality and serves as a reminder that all are equally accountable for their actions, regardless of their background.
