Leviticus 17:3-4 NLT
“If any native Israelite sacrifices a bull or a lamb or a goat anywhere inside or outside the camp instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to present it as an offering to the Lord, that person will be as guilty as a murderer. Such a person has shed blood and will be cut off from the community.”

No room for self-atonement
In the scriptures, it is mentioned that the Lord freed the people of Israel from their Egyptian slave masters. This divine act also resulted in the liberation of other nationalities who were also in Egypt. What’s interesting is that God did not use this freedom as a means to force people of other nationalities to follow His instructions. If God had intended to be forceful, His instructions wouldn’t have been specific to the native Israelites alone.

The word “if” at the beginning of today’s referenced scripture indicates that God did not expect the people of Israel to ignore His instructions. The purpose of these instructions was to emphasize that God does not appreciate the act of spiritual “self-medication,” or attempting to atone for one’s sins independently. The Lord prohibited any native Israelite from making sacrifices on their own, whether inside or outside the camp. In essence, God disapproved of self-atoning. Friends, since the native Israelites needed the high priest, you and I, who are spiritual Israelites, need Christ Jesus, for it is only His blood that atones our sins.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that I will not depend on my efforts but instead focus on the completed work of salvation that Jesus paid for with His life on the cross at Calvary. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
