Numbers 3:35 NLT
“They were assigned the area north of the Tabernacle for their camp. The leader of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail.”

Who is your rock?
When Abihail, whose name means “my father is joy,” chose to name his son Zuriel, he likely had no inkling of the significant role that God would assign to him. In much the same way, we often walk through life unaware of the extraordinary plans that God has for our own journeys. Zuriel’s ascent to leadership was not secured through any human means or political maneuvering; he did not face opposition or rivalry from others seeking power. This suggests that a divine appointment to leadership is characterized by a lack of resistance from those around us, reinforcing the notion that when God appoints someone, it is often met with acceptance and honour from the community.

Moreover, the scripture offers scant details about the lineage of the Merarite clan leader, providing only his name and that of his father, Abihail. This brevity speaks volumes, emphasizing that what truly matters in the eyes of God is not our earthly heritage or status, but our character and our relationship with Him. Abihail named his son Zuriel, which translates to “God is my rock” or “my defender.” This name suggests that Zuriel likely led his life in a manner that consistently honoured and reflected God’s glory. It raises the question of the kind of life he lived—one of faith, humility, and trust in God’s strength—as such qualities would have made him an ideal choice for divine leadership.

So, I ask you, friend: Who is your rock in life? Is your foundation built upon God, or do you find yourself relying on human support? Your answer might shape the course of your own journey just as it did for Zuriel.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that there is no other deity worthy of my devotion but You. In moments of doubt and uncertainty, please be my unwavering rock, a steadfast refuge in all circumstances. I seek Your guidance and strength to navigate life’s challenges, and I dedicate my heart and actions to bring glory to Your name alone. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
