Numbers 1:40-41 NLT
“Tribe of Asher: 41,500”
Are you on the list?
The tribes of Israel were counted in a census that revealed interesting insights beyond mere numbers. While the tribes of Reuben and Simeon had their census figures meticulously documented according to their birth orders as the first and second sons of Jacob, this sequential pattern did not apply to the remaining tribes. For example, Asher, the eighth son of Jacob, had his count recorded in the eleventh position overall. Specifically, there were 41,500 men aged 20 and above from the tribe of Asher, showcasing how their status did not align with their birth order.
This apparent discrepancy serves as an essential lesson about perspective and the nature of hierarchy. It reminds us that, rather than being solely preoccupied with our rank or status within a hierarchy, we should cultivate a profound sense of gratitude for being part of the collective. This reminds me of the song “O when the saints go marching on,” in which one of the lines says, “O Lord, I want to be in that number.” The songwriter didn’t say I want to be first on the list but rather, ” I want to be on the list.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray my name will not be missed from the Book of Life. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
