Numbers 1:22-23 NLT
“Tribe of Simeon: 59,300”
Avoid uncalled-for evaluations
In today’s referenced scripture, we observe two significant aspects worth noting. First, the focus is on the tribe of Simeon, the secondborn son of Jacob. Second, it highlights the specific number of men aged 20 years and older that Moses enlisted for military service on behalf of the nation from the tribe of Simeon.
What stands out in this account is that Moses did not compare the number of men aged 20 years and above from the tribe of Simeon to that of the tribe of Reuben, the firstborn. He refrained from stating that Simeon’s numbers were 1.28 times greater than Reuben’s or suggesting that the secondborn had superior strength in terms of manpower. This absence of comparison is noteworthy, as it illustrates a profound truth: there was no need for such distinctions.
Like Moses, there is no need to make unnecessary comparisons. The reason is that such uncalled-for evaluations can lead to feelings of inadequacy or superiority, which have no place within the community of believers. Instead, let us cultivate gratitude for our unique contributions and blessings. In God’s kingdom, each member has a distinct purpose; therefore, let’s appreciate our number and the roles we play without succumbing to the pressures of comparison. Each person’s value is intrinsic, and there is no basis for feeling inferior or claiming superiority among us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me maintain Your perspective, avoid turning every endeavour into competition, and never cause others to feel inadequate. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
