Numbers 1:20-21 NLT
“This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families: Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,500”
Honour God’s chosen order
In today’s world, nepotism and favouritism have infiltrated various sectors of society, often undermining fairness and equality. However, as children of God, we are called to act without bias or partiality, reflecting the character of our heavenly Father, who exhibits unconditional love and justice towards all. A compelling example of this principle can be found in the life of Moses, who exemplified impartiality in his leadership.
When tasked with organizing the Israelite people, Moses enlisted and documented the names of men aged twenty and older, beginning with Reuben, the firstborn son of Jacob. This is significant, as it highlights Moses’s intent to honour God’s chosen order without letting personal biases influence his decisions. Although Moses was aware of Reuben’s shortcomings—most notably his transgression involving his father’s concubine, which led to losing rights as firstborn—he did not allow this knowledge to prevent him from recognizing Reuben’s tribe in this vital exercise.
Moreover, it is noteworthy that God’s directive included not just the tribe of Reuben but all tribes of Israel, signifying that every individual has a unique and essential role within His divine plan. This inclusivity underscores that our contributions, regardless of their size or visibility, are valued in the eyes of God. Just as the number of men enlisted from the tribe of Reuben was not the highest, you may find that your role in God’s kingdom might not be the most prominent or recognized. Nonetheless, God appreciates and honours the efforts of each person who commits to serving Him, reminding us that every act of service has significance in His grand design.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me always to honour Your will in every endeavour. I pray that nothing I know will stand in opposition to how You want any task to be performed. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
