Leviticus 27:7 NLT
“A man older than sixty is valued at fifteen shekels of silver; a woman of that age is valued at ten shekels of silver.”
Age is not a barrier
Today, I found an article in the newspaper highlighting that a former First Lady of Nigeria recently completed her doctoral program in psychology, guidance, and counselling. The article stated that during her convocation, she passionately shared a message that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams, regardless of age.
Interestingly, this sentiment resonates deeply with today’s scripture, which encourages individuals—especially seniors—not to feel disqualified from dedicating their lives to God due to their age. The narrative emphasizes that true dedication and commitment are not trivial pursuits but significant undertakings that require heartfelt effort and intention.
To put this into perspective, we must consider the historical context: an average labourer would earn approximately one shekel of silver per month in biblical times. Therefore, a person contemplating giving up ten or even fifteen months’ earnings for a cause must seriously weigh their decision. This serves as a reminder that dedication involves significant sacrifice and should be approached with mindful deliberation.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that it is never too late to commit my life to You, regardless of age. Please grant me the wisdom to understand the profound significance of dedicating my life to Christ Jesus and protect me from treating this sacred act as mere child’s play. Help me to approach my faith with reverence and sincerity, embracing the guidance and love that comes from a genuine relationship with You. Amen.
