Leviticus 27:19 NLT
“If the person who dedicated the field wants to buy it back, he must pay the value set by the priest, plus 20 percent. Then the field will again be legally his.”
People may break promises, but God never does
The first key lesson that today’s referenced scripture imparts is the understanding that not everyone who makes a vow inherently wishes to reclaim what they have promised or set aside. This is evidenced by the use of the word “if,” indicating that there are offerors who may see no justification in requesting a buyback of their commitment. Conversely, there are those who may find themselves grappling with what is often termed “giver’s remorse,” a feeling of regret over having made a promise they now wish to retract.
Interestingly, the Lord does not present their vows as irrevocable or admonish them for their inconsistency in decision-making. Instead, He provides a compassionate allowance for them to buy back what they have vowed if they genuinely desire to do so. This reveals a profound aspect of God’s character: His willingness to offer grace and understanding in moments of uncertainty.
This principle also serves as a vital lesson for all who belong to Him; it emphasizes the importance of learning to relinquish attachments. We are encouraged to embrace letting go, understanding that true commitment often involves the flexibility to adapt and respond to our evolving convictions and feelings.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to be compassionate with others and understand that only You can make a promise and never break it. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
