Leviticus 26:41 NLT
“When I have turned their hostility back on them and brought them to the land of their enemies, then at last their stubborn hearts will be humbled, and they will pay for their sins.”
Stubborn heart
A preacher’s wife once recounted a memorable family vacation to a nearby lake many years ago, long before the establishment of the Child Protective Services Department. Her younger brother was notoriously restless and refused to stay close to their parents despite her mother’s best efforts to keep him within reach. The water was icy cold, and the mother tried everything—gentle coaxing, playful distractions, and even threats—but nothing seemed to entice him closer.
Frustrated and desperate, the mother decided to take a more drastic approach. Without warning, she took her brother by the hand and dipped him into the frigid lake. The shock of the cold water was immediate and intense. To everyone’s surprise, the boy emerged from the water wide-eyed and shivering, but from that moment on, he was no longer interested in venturing near the lake again for the rest of their time at the vacation spot.
The boy’s action was emblematic of a stubborn heart that resisted instructions until faced with a stark reality. Similarly, the Lord spoke about how His people would ultimately have their hearts humbled—not through gentle persuasion, but often through challenging circumstances, such as being exiled to the land of their enemies and forced to confront the consequences of their actions. Friends, this serves as a reminder that no stubborn heart can stand before God’s will. Therefore, let us humble our hearts willingly rather than waiting for the lessons that come through avoidable hardships and disciplines.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me recognize any stubbornness in my life so that I may turn away from it before it triggers Your wrath. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
