Leviticus 26:35 NLT
“As long as the land lies in ruins, it will enjoy the rest you never allowed it to take every seventh year while you lived in it.”
Then, at last
Living in the promised land was a gift from God that came at no monetary cost to the people of Israel; however, they were reminded that to truly experience the abundant blessings and prosperity of the Lord, they needed to attentively heed His guidance and instructions. After spending generations in Egypt, the Israelites inevitably absorbed various cultural practices and behaviours that could create barriers to their relationship with God. These practices, steeped in idolatry and materialism, could cloud their judgment and distract them from their covenant with the Lord.
Recognizing this, the Lord encouraged them to let go of their former ways and embrace His divine guidance wholeheartedly. A critical aspect of this guidance included the instruction to allow the land to rest every seven years. This practice was not only a demonstration of their obedience but also an acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty over creation, ensuring the land remained fertile and productive.
Furthermore, the message highlighted a crucial principle: if the Israelites chose to ignore the clear and straightforward directive laid out by God regarding the land’s rest every seventh year, they would inadvertently initiate a series of adverse consequences. Potentially, this could result in their expulsion from the land, a fate which would not be their choosing but rather a consequence of their disobedience. The Lord made it unambiguously clear—should the people neglect to treat their land with the care and respect it deserves, they would face unavoidable repercussions. The land would become desolate, and they would endure hardships from their negligence.
Ultimately, the profound lesson here offers both warning and encouragement: as long as God lives, every promise He has made—whether related to blessings, protection, or restoration—will be fulfilled, regardless of human actions or disbelief. This enduring assurance provides a wellspring of hope and motivation for the Israelites to remain steadfast in their faith and committed to obedience, understanding that their choices directly influence their relationship with God and their ultimate flourishing in the land promised to them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a grateful heart, truly thankful for the unwavering assurance that no power in this world can take away the promises You have made to me. I trust in Your faithfulness and love, knowing each promise reflects Your grace and goodness. I stand firm in my faith, believing in the victory that comes through Jesus Christ. Amen.
