Leviticus 26:23-24 NLT
“And if you fail to learn the lesson and continue your hostility toward me, then I myself will be hostile toward you. I will personally strike you with calamity seven times over for your sins.”
An alarming truth
A prominent feature of my early childhood education was my significant struggle with various arithmetic concepts. I vividly remember the frustration of repeatedly making mistakes, necessitating multiple corrections before I could grasp the material correctly. My teachers, including my parents, did not appreciate it when I failed to internalize the underlying reasons for these corrections.
If humans typically do not appreciate disingenuous responses to their guidance, how much more must God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, abhor willful disobedience? This sentiment resonates profoundly with today’s referenced scripture, emphasizing that we actively shape how God responds to us. The I AM WHO I AM communicated to the people of Israel that their antagonism toward Him would elicit a similar hostility in return.
Furthermore, the verse illuminates an alarming truth: sin fundamentally disrupts the relationship between God and the sinner, leading to divine opposition. The consequences of failing to repent are far-reaching and often exceed what any individual can fully comprehend. The inevitable fallout from such disobedience is a reality that underscores the seriousness of our choices and the importance of seeking genuine reconciliation with the divine.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a humble heart, asking for Your guidance and wisdom. Please help me truly appreciate the lessons in Your Word, recognizing their profound significance in my life. May I earnestly pursue a relationship with You and guard against any negligence that may lead me away from Your truth. Keep my heart steadfast in Your teachings so that I may never, through my disregard, allow our bond to weaken and consequently make You my adversary. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
