Leviticus 26:16 NLT
“I will punish you. I will bring sudden terrors upon you—wasting diseases and burning fevers that will cause your eyes to fail and your life to ebb away. You will plant your crops in vain because your enemies will eat them.”
Born out of love
Today’s referenced scripture is a message that is often overlooked or misapplied. Many might avoid studying this scripture altogether because of what is stated therein, and if they do engage with it, they may do so to use it against their perceived enemies. However, it is crucial to understand that this message was intended specifically for the people of Israel, not their adversaries. The scripture reminds that when any believer chooses to engage in sinful or ill behaviour, such as willfully rejecting divine guidance, God does not simply ignore these actions.
In this scripture, God made it abundantly clear that He does not delegate the task of correction to others; instead, He takes personal responsibility for addressing the waywardness of His people. His statement, “I will punish you,” emphasizes the seriousness with which He regards sin within His family. This punishment is not born out of anger or vindictiveness, for the Lord finds no joy in punishing His children. Instead, it expresses His deep love and commitment to holiness.
Yet, we must reflect: are we, in our daily lives, taking His grace and guidance for granted? The repeated calls to repentance and obedience are not merely reminders but invitations to cultivate a closer relationship with Him. As we ponder the implications of the scripture, let us seek to align our hearts and actions with His will, acknowledging that His discipline ultimately aims to restore us rather than condemn us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please guide me so that I do not bring punishment upon myself. If there are areas in my life where I may be facing consequences, please open my eyes to the need for change. I ask that You remember the completed work of salvation that Jesus accomplished through His sacrifice on the cross at Calvary and restore me. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
