Leviticus 25:52 NLT
“If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they will repay a small amount for their redemption.”
‭‭
Responsibility and integrity
In the preceding verse, the Lord conveyed a profound directive regarding the Israelites who, in times of hardship, found themselves selling their freedom to foreigners. Those who had entered such binding agreements could not simply walk away without fulfilling their obligations; they were called to indemnify their foreign owners appropriately.

The sum to be repaid was intricately tied to the proximity of the next Jubilee. The longer the wait until this release, the greater the financial responsibility. Conversely, as the scripture states, “if only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee,” the indemnity would correspondingly diminish, reflecting the urgency of impending freedom.

This scripture reveals a striking truth: the individual who had sold himself—desiring redemption—was required to compensate the foreigner who had purchased his labour. This stipulation underscores a significant principle of justice within God’s framework. Notably, God did not demand any offering or sacrifice that would unjustly deprive the buyer of his rightful compensation. Furthermore, there was no request for the individual seeking emancipation to entreat God for the buyer’s favour, hoping that he will forget to request for compensation.

This narrative illustrates God’s unwavering sense of justice, emphasizing that He does not show favouritism in judgment. Regardless of status or circumstance, every individual is held to the same standard, highlighting the divine commitment to equity and fairness in all matters of the heart and soul.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You, asking for the wisdom and strength to understand and appreciate the freedom You have so graciously granted me. Help me to wield this freedom with responsibility and integrity, ensuring that my choices reflect Your love and guidance. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
